Building A Staff Library On A High School Budget

4 min read Jerry Campbell Football

Five thousand pages is a lot to buy at once. Here is a sensible order for a staff adding titles across a season.

Start with the side you are rebuilding

If you are changing your defensive front this off-season, buy the front. If you are changing your backfield, buy the offense. The manuals are written to stand alone, so there is no penalty for taking them one at a time.

Then buy the bundle

The eBook bundle represents 16 different eBooks offering 5,000+ pages of information on offense, defense and program organization. On a per-page basis it is by a distance the best value in the bookstore, and it is the simplest way to give an entire staff the same reference.

Do not skip the kicking game

Special teams manuals are the ones staffs postpone and then wish they had bought in July. They are also the cheapest units to fix, because the improvement comes from organisation rather than personnel.

Keep the career titles on the shelf

Program organization and interview preparation material is worth having before you need it. The season you need it is rarely the season you have time to read it.

Put it on paper

Every idea here is drawn from the coaching library — X-and-O diagrams, install progressions and the coaching points that make a scheme hold up.
